The Beginning: The Journey of One of Those Kids Who Grew Up on the Internet

This blog is a space for me to reflect on ideas from my class "Interpersonal Media". This class is taught by Daena Goldsmith, a professor in the Rhetoric and Media Studies department of Lewis & Clark College. We will be examining the ways in which the media we use to communicate in our daily lives function in shaping our identities, relationships & communities.

You can expect me to post about the readings and discussions we have in class, as well as reflections and observations from my own experiences using electronically mediated communication (EMC). I am an iPhone, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Wordpress, & (most recently added) Twitter user. What does it mean to be plugged into so many different forums for expression? What different relationships do I build and maintain through these platforms? Is this a good use of my time? Will my future occupation be dependent upon me knowing how to navigate the digital world?

We are living in an astounding time of constant stimulation and connection. Join me in this journey of learning to be mindful of the media that surrounds us-- to appreciate the luxury of fast and beautiful exchanges of information, while remaining curious and critical about the consequential effects. I hope that through exploring some of my class material and by observing my own adventure, anyone who follows along with this blog will be able to take the time to meditate on their own media use, and grow from any insights.
